A blog consists of a series of regular entries on a webpage over a particular topic. They can range from sports, religion, or even a personal diary. Since a successful blog has to be updated so often, the topic is usually something that the writer can personally relate to. Typically, the newest entries are kept at the top of the page for the reader to see, while older entries are moved down or archived.

As the internet continues to evolve, more people are starting to realize that getting online is the way to go. They understand that making money blogging can be a very fruitful way of generating income. Most of the time this means to promote something. Generally that "something" is of particular interest of the writer, or at least directly relating to the blog topic.

While most people would say that a blog is easier to set-up than a full blown website, they would also agree that it takes just as much time and energy to maintain. Your visitors expect to see constantly updated information, be it monthly, weekly, or even daily. Because of this, a blog has been recognized as a way to advertising products, sales, or even services.

In larger businesses, certain employees are in charge of company blogs. The "corporate blogger" as their called, has become something of a common job title (The New Rules of Business Blogs pg 8). But this begs the question, "Why blog for business?"

From Coca-Cola to Foot Locker, blogs have increased brand recognition to companies big and small. They use their blogs to advertise their new shoes for the season, or offer special promotions through a sister company. Most of the time, it's to increase brand recognition of a product or service. This marketing tool is so effective in the age of the internet, companies see the question "why blog?" as a no-brainer...and if writing is your thing, so should you.

So if companies can have brand recognition, can people have name recognition by creating a blog? Absolutely.

Many actors have taken up blogging to keep pace with their fan base and promote upcoming movies. Several politicians, whether they're running or not, have blogs. While political blogs exist in several countries, they have the greatest popularity and impact in the United States.

Blog Hosts

There are many blog hosts out there, but which one is right for you? Before answering that question, you need to know the subject matter of your blog. For instance, are you making a personal blog, almost like a diary? Or perhaps you want to make a blog to advertise an e-good or subject specific product. Both of which need two different blog hosting plans.

After you know that, then you should start looking at proper hosts and what they offer. Two of the more popular blog hosts are Wordpress and Blogger.
